A highly popular group of weight loss and diabetes drugs is still hard to find in the U.S. The dominant manufacturers of those treatments, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk , are making progress toward changing that. Patients using current autoinjectors for weight loss and diabetes drugs go through four different pens per month. Eli Lilly expects supply for Zepbound, Mounjaro and other incretin drugs to remain "quite tight" in the near- to mid-term as demand remains high, Ashkenazi said. On the day Eli Lilly reported earnings, shares of the company jumped more than 5% on the raised guidance and supply updates.

Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in both Eli Lilly's diabetes treatment Mounjaro and its anti-obesity drug Zepbound. Based on that calculation, earnings will be lower by about 13 cents per share, he said, in research published last Tuesday. "Strong demand for Mounjaro & Zepbound can easily pull through in 2H24 and make up for any 1H24 shortfalls." For the week ended April 19, combined prescriptions of Mounjaro and Zepbound rose 63% year over year, according to IQVIA. Wells Fargo Mohit Bansal said he expects investors to look past any Trulicity shortfalls as the focus is firmily on Zepbound and Mounjaro for Lilly's future growth.

Many biotech stocks struggled in 2023 despite a robust year for U.S. drug approvals. "We expect this environment to continue but look forward to the prospect of lower interest rates in 2024." When that happens, Canaccord Genuity said to expect a "strong rally across the biotech sector rewarding innovative, but riskier assets." Analysts have said the rich price reflects the opportunity for ImmunoGen's Elahere cancer treatment , which has quickly established itself as the standard of care for types of ovarian cancer. 'Oversold and cheap' In a research note Friday, Jefferies analyst Michael Yee said "a significant short squeeze" was helping biotech stocks in the fourth quarter.

Eli Lilly on Thursday said supply of its blockbuster diabetes drug Mounjaro has improved in the U.S. after months of widespread shortages. During an earnings call Thursday, Eli Lilly executives said the company experienced tight supply for Mounjaro throughout most of the third quarter. But U.S. product shipments of Mounjaro have recently increased, and inventory levels at U.S. drug wholesalers have improved, according to Eli Lilly CFO Anat Ashkenazi. Eli Lilly has also invested more than $3 billion to build two new manufacturing sites in its home state of Indiana. Eli Lilly's main rival in the weight loss drug space, Novo Nordisk , is still navigating its own supply constraints of diabetes drug Ozempic and obesity treatment Wegovy.

Most analysts predict the market for new weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro will be enormous, but estimates vary for its exact size depending on who you ask. On Monday, Citi raised its estimate for incretin drug sales to $71 billion by 2035, up from its prior estimate of $55 billion. Last month, the firm made a case for there being a $150 billion to $200 billion opportunity for these drugs. At the moment, private insurance coverage isn't a guarantee for those seeking weight loss treatment, and the federal Medicare program doesn't cover weight loss drugs at all. Lilly expects the Food and Drug Administration to approve this drug to treat obesity by the end of this year.

One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

Fernandez sees a total addressable market of $140 billion to support patients with obesity. He expects there is a potential for GLP-1 drugs to become as common and widely used, much like statins are used to lower cholesterol. Morgan Stanley's Flynn estimates a 30% share of the diabetes market would generate $109 billion on a worldwide basis for GLP-1 drugs. Layer in a 15% to 30% share of the obesity market and that equates to worldwide sales of $97.4 billion to $194.8 billion. Guggenheim's estimates also assume that oral GLP-1 drugs that are currently in development are able to come to market a few years from now.

Eli Lilly on Friday said it will acquire Versanis, a privately held obesity drug maker, for up to $1.93 billion to boost the pharmaceutical giant's weight loss treatment portfolio. Eli Lilly agreed to pay Versanis shareholders in cash, which will consist of an upfront payment and potentially subsequent payments if Versanis achieves certain "development and sales milestones." Oakland, California-based Versanis, which was founded in 2021 by biotech investment firm Aditum Bio, has one experimental drug for obesity and potentially other conditions. Analysts project that the global weight loss drug market could be worth $100 billion by around 2030. Versanis' drug, bimagrumab, binds directly to certain cells in the body to reduce fat mass.

July 14 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N) said on Friday it will buy privately held Versanis for potentially up to $1.93 billion to strengthen its position in the fast-growing market for weight-loss treatments. Shares of Eli Lilly rose 3% after the deal that gives it access to an experimental obesity drug being tested along with rival Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) weight-loss treatment in a mid-stage study. Analysts expect the market for weight-loss drugs to reach up to $100 billion within a decade, with early movers such as Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk grabbing a large chunk of the market. "One of the key concerns with weight loss medications is the loss of lean mass. The goal is to lose more fat vs. muscle, but with any weight loss program calorie restriction could impact both," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman.

More than 40% of Americans are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and demand is strong for treatments to reduce body weight as well as maintain weight loss. The company said it would continue to develop its twice-daily weight loss drug candidate. Structure Therapeutics (GPCR.O) is developing oral obesity drugs that it says are simpler to manufacture than the current injectables. "We define weight loss quality as the percentage of weight loss attributed to fat loss," said Versanis Chief Scientific Officer Lloyd Klickstein. "With diets, bariatric surgery, incretin drugs or other weight loss drugs, two-thirds to three-quarters of the weight loss is fat, but one-quarter to one-third is lean."

Companies Eli Lilly and Co FollowJune 26 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly (LLY.N) on Monday said a mid-stage trial of its next-generation obesity drug candidate "triple G" showed that it led to weight loss of up to 24.2% after 48 weeks, surpassing results seen with other weight loss drugs. Lilly's Mounjaro, which is awaiting U.S. regulatory approval for treatment of obesity, targets GLP-1 as well as a second obesity-related hormone called GIP. Retatrutide targets GLP-1, GIP and the body's receptors for a third hormone, glucagon. Given the three targets, Lilly has nicknamed the drug triple G.The company reported last year that a trial of Mounjaro in people who were obese or overweight found it led to weight loss of 22.5% after 72 weeks. Lilly is conducting longer-duration phase 3 trials of retatrutide to see if weight loss might be further improved.
